Solomon, King of Israel, settles a dispute between two women claiming to be the mother of the same child, another infant having died at birth. The sovereign proposes to cut the surviving baby in two, so that each mother can dispose of one half. The biological mother then renounces her child to spare him from death. The king recognizes her as the child's true mother. (1 Kings 3:16-28).
