The chemist, late 18th century snuffbox

Snuffbox made of lacquered tortoiseshell inlaid with gold sequins.

The lid features a painted miniature, outlined in gold (?), depicting a female chemist.

We naturally thinks of Emilie du Châtelet and Marie-Anne Paulze, wife of Lavoisier, but the portrait bears little resemblance.

Good condition (small crack on one side, some sequins missing)

D: 8.1 cm
