The lid features an engraving inspired by a passage from the medieval courtly novel Lancelot ou le Chevalier de la charrette by Chrétien de Troyes (written between 1176-1181), illustrating the love story of Lancelot and Guinevere.
Inside, two evocations of the novel Paul et Virginie by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, (published in 1788): Paul and Virginia cross the torrent ; Virginia's budding love for Paul in the image of the fire he tries to kindle.
Good overall condition (a few stains and tears).
