Scatological snuffbox, circa 1830

Wooden and papier-mache snuffbox, the lid applied with a varnished engraving depicting a scatological scene (political cartoon?): an aristocratic-looking couple in a street or courtyard. The woman urinating under her dress. She is holding the hat, umbrella and cane of the man crouching behind her, whom she is trying to hide. The man has a grimace of disgust on his face, his pants are folded over his knees and he is holding a torn piece of paper (letter?) with which he is going to wipe himself after defecating.

Good condition (small varnish chips).

D : 9 cm

This iconography is taken from the engraving "Cela ne se dit pas, mais cela se devine" (You can't tell, but you can guess) printed in Paris by Martinet, rue du Coq.
