The first Fete de la Federation and Declaration of the Rights of Man, a late 19th-century fan

A bone brisé fan, painted and varnished, commemorating key events of the French Revolution:

in the centre, the first Fête de la Fédération on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris on 14 July 1790, flanked on one side by Lafayette taking the oath on the altar of the Fatherland in front of more than 400,000 Parisians gathered to celebrate the storming of the Bastille a year earlier, and on the other by the adoption of the first French Constitution on 3 September 1791, with King Louis XVI’s speech bringing the debates of the Constituent Assembly to a close.

On the reverse, national unity is symbolised by the union of the tricolour flag and the king’s white fleur-de-lis flag, the Phrygian cap and the Tables of the Declaration of the Rights of Man. In the background, one can make out the Temple Tower, where Louis XVI and the royal family were imprisoned from 1792 to 1795.

The guards are decorated with fleurs-de-lis, Phrygian caps, the king’s portrait, and the towers of the Bastille...
