The idea of an “International Women's Day” was adopted in Copenhagen in 1910, at the 2nd International Conference of Socialist Women, which brought together some one hundred women from 17 different countries. The first was organized a year later, on March 19, 1911, to demand women's right to vote, and the right and fi of discrimination in the workplace. Over a million people took part in rallies in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland.
