This pheasant is named in commemoration of Countess Sarah Amherst, naturalist and botanist, wife of the British Governor of India, William Pitt Amherst, who was the first to send one of these birds to London in 1828. The Countess had received two pheasants as a diplomatic gift from the Burmese ruler Bagyidaw.
