Fan leaf, gouache watercolor on tracing paper, probably depicting Mars or Bellona on her chariot.
Attributed to Anthelme François LAGRENEE (1774-1832).
Condition: sun-faded, stains.
Framed and under glass (damaged)
Son and pupil of Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée the Elder (director of the École de Rome and later rector of the Académie), Anthelme went on to study under François-André Vincent. He began his artistic career during the French Revolution. He exhibited at the Salon from 1799 to 1831. He is particularly known for his miniatures.
Here, the subject can be compared to one of his father's works, “L'Épée ou Bellone présentant à Mars les rênes de ses chevaux” (Bellona presenting Mars with the reins of her horses), held at the Princeton University Art Museum (inv: y1975-15).
