Small stains

In the early 1920s, tuberculosis was killing more than 150,000 French people a year. Drawing on the American example of Dr Trudeau in the village of Saranac (USA), it was decided to build sanatoriums for the middle classes on the Passy Praz-Coutant plateau, at an altitude of 1,300 metres. The Association of Villages Sanatoriums de Haute-Altitude [High-Altitude Sanatorium Villages] was founded in 1922 and spearheaded this health and architectural project, with the laying of the foundation stone taking place in 1924. The first sanatorium opened in 1926.
