The young Queen Isabella II was three years old when her father, King Ferdinand VII, died. A conflict ensued (the First Carlist War) between the late king's brother and legitimist pretender Charles de Bourbon and Isabella's mother, the regent Marie-Christine de Bourbon-Siciles, supported by an international alliance (Portugal, France, England with the Quadruple Alliance treaty signed in 1834).
