Atala and Chactas, fan circa 1840

Bone fan, the skin leaf painted with three cartels, one of which depicts the Indian couple Atala and Chactas crossing the Meschacebé River on a raft, as told in the novel Atala, ou Les Amours de deux sauvages dans le désert by French writer François-René de Chateaubriand (published in 1801).
The second cartel could represent Othello and Desdemona in Venice, based on Shakespeare's tragedy Othello or the Moor of Venice, first performed in 1604.

Condition: tears, restorations to the leaf, one fold laminated. top of guard damaged
