Fan, the skin leaf delicately penciled in brown monochrome with a triumph of Silenus (Bacchus' foster father).
Rich border ornamentation.
The reverse features a caged bird, an allegory of carnal love, surmounted by the sentence “J'ai perdu ma liberté” (“I've lost my freedom”). The cage is suspended in knotted rose branches, while butterflies and birds, obviously flighty, flutter towards the flowering bush on either side.
White mother-of-pearl sticks and guards, finely carved, pierced, engraved, applied with gold and silver leaf. Couples dance to the sound of the musicians' oboe, while putti frolic amidst painted and varnished garlands of fruit and flowers. The central cartel features allegories of music.
Good condition (small stains, restoration to the back of the leaf, restoration to the reverse of a stick).
Height: 28.5 cm
