Cakewalk is a dance come from the black slaves of America. It arrives in France at the end of 1902 with the Elks and their troop of black and white dancers who interpret it in the Nouveau-Cirque (Movies are even realized.), then it is taken back by some famous dancers as Polaire, Mistinguett, Max Dearly, La Goulue... Cakewalk is famous during more than three years in spite of the efforts of some detractors which try by all means to stigmatize this dance of "savages".
